Uttarakhand is Now Home to 242 Tigers; Remains 2nd Tiger Rich State in India
In the latest 2016-2017 tiger census, a population of 242 tigers was recorded in Uttarakhand’s wildlife reserves. The recent declaration made by CM, Trivendra Rawat also confirms that the state has secured the 2nd position in India as the destination with highest tiger population. The first place is still maintained by Karnataka with a tiger count of 400. According to Rawat, there has been a rise of 63 tigers as compared to the last year census, and 11 new cubs were also sighted in the state’s two major tiger reserves, i.e., Corbett and Rajaji.
There has been noticed a rise of tigers from 163 to 208 Uttarakhand’s popular national park, Corbett. Also, additional 6 tiger cubs were also spotted in the park. On the other hand, 34 tigers have been recorded from Rajaji Tiger Reserve, which were around 16 last year; there were also recorded a presence of 5 tiger cubs in the reserve this year. The Uttarakhand Government is said to have installed more than 500 camera traps each in both Corbett and Rajaji Tiger Reserves to trace the tiger movement.
